Baxter & Woodman Celebrates 75 Year Anniversary

On January 19th, 1946, company founders Richard Baxter and Lorrin Woodman began a journey that ultimately lead to the firm known today as Baxter & Woodman, Inc., Consulting Engineers.

In the beginning, Baxter & Woodman focused on providing water and wastewater treatment for municipalities out of a small 2-man office located on the shores of Crystal Lake, Illinois. Today, Baxter & Woodman has a team of over 320 team members with clients being served out of fourteen offices throughout North America.

Over the years, the company’s service offerings have expanded. Baxter & Woodman now provides planning, design, construction and technology services for water, wastewater, stormwater and transportation facilities for municipalities, counties and state agencies and more. Environmental, geographic information systems (GIS), water and wastewater operations, and advanced technology needs complement the firm’s civil engineering expertise. The company has several subsidiaries including ones focused on Natural Resources, Municipal Technology, and Design-Build project delivery.

Baxter & Woodman is consistently recognized by Engineering News-Record as one of the nation’s Top 500 Design Firms and by the American Consulting Engineers Council and the American Public Works Association for award winning project designs.

Baxter & Woodman established an Employee Shareholder Plan in 1975 to solidify their employees’ dedication to the company’s success and provide continued leadership transition. Today, the company has over 140 employee-owners who work as a team empowered to exceed client expectations and drive Baxter & Woodman forward into the next 75 years.

Baxter & Woodman was built on a legacy of integrity and goodwill of its employees. In 2017, the firm launched B&W Cares, a corporate 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, created to amplify the giving efforts of Baxter & Woodman employees and their families. B&W Cares supports the charities and causes that our employees are engaged with through payroll donations, corporate matches, and other fundraising efforts.

“On our firm’s 75th anniversary, I am proud to recognize and continue the legacy established by our founders, of growing the business and providing superior personal service while giving back to our communities.” John V. Ambrose, President/CEO.
